What is Viral Marketing?
Viral marketing is any form of marketing that encourages individuals to pass on a marketing message to others, creating the potential for growth in the message’s exposure and influence. Like viruses, such strategies take advantage of rapid multiplication to explode the message to thousands, to millions.
Up until now, the various forms that "viral" marketing has taken was referred to as “word-of-mouth,” “creating a buzz,” “leveraging the media,” “network marketing.”
On the Internet it’s called “viral marketing.”
An excellent example of viral marketing is Hotmail.com. Hotmail.com was one of the first free email services.
They gave away free email addresses and services. At the bottom of every free message sent out, they attached a tag saying “Get your private, free email at http://www.hotmail.com”.
What happened next was that people forwarded this to their own network of friends and associates.
There people than saw the message, signed up for their own free email service and in doing so, propagated the message still wider to their own ever-increasing circles of friends and associates.
It was just like dropping a pebble into a pool of water and watching the ripples spread outwards, wider and wider.
Another example is of couse the junk emails you receive, promising a free gift of a cell phone (or a laptop, or a ....whatever!!) if you send the email on to 10 of your friends, etc etc. (Of course the gift never actually materialises, but hey! Hope springs eternal in the human breast!!)
Before you can say "Jack Rabbit", there are a million copies circling the world!
